OFFICE OF THE LEGAL ADVISER Brief Background
The Legal Unit was officially established in 2004, located at the level 4 of Human Sciences building. Prior to the establishment of the its, matters related to staff discipline, general litigation cases involving the University and constitutional issues of the University were under the purview of the Management Services Division.
On the other hand, matters related to students’ discipline and litigation cases involving students were under the Disciplinary Unit, Office of the Rector (Student Affairs and Development).
The Law Centre, Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL) was also playing a significant role particularly in relation to drafting and vetting of legal documents as well as providing legal opinions on legal issues involving the University.
With the expansion and rapid development of the University, there were lots of agreements, contracts and Memorandum of Understanding to be executed. The management of the University viewed that the University was in dire need of a Legal Unit due to increasing number of legal matters involving the University, which related to student, staff and the University as the whole necessitating and entity of its own under the Office of the Rector.
In addition, there was a need for a central unit which functions as an advisory to the University on legal issues concerning the University which include to vet through documents before any executions or enforcements.
The Unit was put under the purview of the Office of the Rector. With the establishment of “Office Of The Ombudsman and Integrity” in 12th November 2019, the Integrity Unit was no more under Office of the Legal Adviser.
