This initiative, part of the IIUM Research and Innovation Day 2024, highlights the potential of young minds in tackling environmental issues and promoting hygiene.

The idea stemmed from the pressing issue of waste cooking oil disposal, which if not handled properly, can harm the environment. Under the guidance of Dr. Noor Artika Hassan, an expert in environmental health from IIUM, students from SKAP were taught how to repurpose this oil into a useful product. The students were hands-on in transforming the used oil into biodegradable soap paper, which can be used for handwashing.

The project not only teaches students valuable scientific skills but also emphasizes the importance of sustainability. The soap paper is designed to be lightweight, portable, and easy to use — a single sheet is enough for one handwash. This innovation was recognized at the IIUM Research and Innovation Day, where the students from SKAP received the Anugerah Emas (Gold Award) for their work.

The collaboration between IIUM, SKAP, and local community experts has provided a platform for students to engage with real-world problems. Dr. Noor Artika emphasized the role of this project in nurturing young scientists, fostering a culture of innovation while addressing environmental concerns.

This initiative represents a growing movement towards sustainable solutions, showing that even young students can contribute to the global effort to reduce waste and improve sanitation. The SKAP students demonstrated not only creativity but also leadership, as they presented their project to visitors, sharing knowledge and spreading awareness on environmental conservation.

This project serves as a shining example of how educational institutions can empower the younger generation to become changemakers in society. The soap paper innovation, a fusion of science and environmental consciousness, is a step forward in creating a cleaner, greener future.

The innovative soap paper has earned Gold Awards in three prestigious competitions:

IIUM Research and Innovation Day 2024
The students were honored with the Gold Award for their creativity and scientific approach in turning waste into a valuable product.
